Tokyo Poker Tour Holds Successful Inaugural Event

The newly-created Tokyo Poker Tour (TPT) held its debut tournament this past weekend and it was a success as poker players and even celebrities from all over Japan were in attendance.

A total of 150 players, many with APT, APPT, and WSOP experience, came to the Japanese capital for the TPT’s very first tournament.

In the end, it would be Takeshi "JAYRO" Shioji who would win the tournament and the coveted title of being the TPT’s first champion.

The Osaka-based poker player took home a prize package of US $3,000, which included a WSOP side event prize package and Everest Poker merchandise.

“I am so happy to get prize at the first TPT event. I came all the way from Osaka with my friends to come and play poker here,” said Mr. Shioji. “Hopefully next time, there will also be an event in Osaka.”

The second and third placers in the tournament both received merchandise prize packages, including gift pack bundles from Everest Poker. In Japan, government regulations prohibit the handing out monetary prize packages.

Even with no prize money at stake, it was fun all around for everybody in attendance. Two of Japan’s most popular professional wrestlers, DDT’s Sanshiro Takagi and Muscle Sakai, played in the tournament and left with a positive impression of poker.

In addition, there was a surprise guest at the final table. Tokio, the twelve-year-old son of TPT tournament director and promoter Itaru Kaneko, was the dealer, drawing raves from the crowd and making him a lock to be the youngest dealer at a Japanese poker tournament.

The TPT tournament was held this past June 19 at the Tokyo Women’s Plaza at Omotesando. Buy-in for the event was 4,500 yen.

According to Mr. Kaneko, the next TPT events will be held on August 7 and August 14. The prizes for those events will include a Spanish Poker Tour (SPT) package tour and a 7 Luck Casino prize package for two.

Asia PokerNews Featured Poker Room: TNC Poker

One of the fastest-growing poker rooms in Hong Kong is TNC, a card room with a friendly atmosphere and plenty of great players.

TNC, which opened in February of this year, is short for Tuesday Night Club. According to Frankie Chow, who manages the poker room, the room’s name has significance to its players.

“TNC is a group of poker players; back then we loved to play on Tuesdays. We started by playing home games at a friend’s home in Hong Kong Island. In time, the number of players grew so we needed to find a new place to play,” he said.

The TNC has four tables open from Monday to Saturday and is closed on Sundays. Cash games that take place in the room usually fall in the ranges of HKD 5/10 and HKD 10/20 stakes.

Regular tournaments in the future are also being planned. In the meantime, there are plenty of alternatives at the poker room.

“Right now we don’t have any tournaments yet. But we do have Sit N Go’s. At around 6 or 7 pm, we usually have groups of friends gathering around and creating their own little tournaments just for fun, said Mr. Chow. “The buy-in is often about HKD 100 and it’s winner-take-all. But we do plan to organize more tournaments and events in the future.”

With its membership growing steadily, Mr. Chow says that they are definitely looking to promote the TNC brand.

“I know there will be many competitors in Hong Kong in the future. So my wish is to establish and promote the TNC as a brand name,” he said. “Right now we have four or five players who are our TNC pros. We send them to poker tournaments in Macau and even the Philippines to represent our poker room and wear our team jackets.”

“We also plan to have a newbie night every Monday where new players can come learn the game at smaller blinds such as HKD 1/2 and HKD 2/4. We want people here to try poker. I guess at this stage many people in Hong Kong think that poker is gambling and luck, so we want them to try it out and see for themselves that it mostly skill. Poker is a great sport and a fun game.”

The TNC is located on the second floor of the Yeung Iu Chi Commercial Building on Jaffe Road in Causeway Bay, Hong Kong. For more information, visit them on the web by clicking here.

Henrietes Acain Wins Php 1M Guaranteed Tournament in Cebu

Local poker player Henrietes Acain took home first prize at last weekend’s Php 1,000,000 guaranteed tournament at the All-In Poker Sports Club in Cebu, Philippines.

Acain, who hails from the nearby island province of Siquijor, overcame a field of top players from Cebu and the rest of the Philippines to win the Php 350,000 in total prizes. He was awarded Php 200,000 in prize money as well as a package to the upcoming APT Philippines 2010 main event worth Php 150,000.

On the last hand of the tournament, with blinds at 20,000/40,000, Acain made a button raise of 80,000 and was called by Jeff Clair, his heads-up opponent. When the flop came {2-Clubs} {a-Diamonds} {7-Spades}, Jeff shoved his stack all-in and Acain made the call after a few moments of deliberation.

Jeff showed {10-Clubs} {2-Hearts}for flopped bottom pair but Acain was just a notch higher as he tabled {q-Clubs} {7-Clubs}.

The turn and river did not help either player, sending Clair out in second place and giving Acain the championship. For his runner-up finish, Clair received Php 175,000 in prize money.

The All-In Club’s single-day Php 1,000,000 guaranteed tournament took place on May 29 at the poker room’s location inside PAGCOR Cebu at the Waterfront Hotel & Casino in Cebu City. Buy-in for the event was Php 5,000 + Php 500.

Victorino Torres Wins APPT Macau Main Event

Victorino Torres of the Northern Mariana Islands was the big winner at the recently concluded Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT) Macau  main event, outlasting 341 other players to win HK $3,246,200 in prize money.

An attorney by profession, Torres had to face adversity all throughout the tournament. Left with just 2,500 in chips after Day 1, he rebuilt his stack to a respectable number only to have it reduced to about seven big blinds on Day 3.

Undaunted, he made the long climb back until he was part of the final table. Even then, he had his work cut out for him as he started the final day with the second-smallest stack.

Torres never gave up, though, and he finally had his breakthrough late in the day as he caught fire and eliminated two consecutive players to end up with a commanding chip lead over Cole Swannack and Chong Cheong.

After Cheong had eliminated Swannack, who moved all-in with deuces only to find that Cheong had limped with aces, the tournament was down to the final two. Cheong would manage to double-up early on, but Torres would make sure that heads-up play wouldn’t last very long.

On the final hand, Cheong raised from the button to 125,000 and Torres made the call from the big blind. The flop came {j-Spades}{10-Hearts}{9-Spades}and Torres checked over to Cheong, who immediately moved all-in for a massive overbet of the pot.

Without hesitating, Torres snap-called the shove and tabled {8-Clubs}{7-Clubs} for the flopped bottom straight. However, Cheong was still alive as he had outs to the higher straight with {q-Spades}{6-Clubs}. The cards he needed would not come, eliminating him in second place for a cash prize of HK $2,088,000.

Here are the payouts from the final table:

1st - Victorino Torres (3,246,200 HKD)
2nd - Chong Cheong (2,088,000 HKD)
3rd - Cole Swannack (1,177,600 HKD)
4th - Jeppe Drivsholm (891,000 HKD)
5th - Kenny Nielsen (700,000 HKD)
6th - Brian Green (572,900 HKD)
7th - Kai Paulsen (445,600 HKD)
8th - Albert Kim (350,100 HKD)
9th - Keith Hawkins (254,608 HKD)

This year’s APPT Macau was held from May 18-23 at the Grand Lisboa’s PokerStars Macau poker room. Buy-in was HK $40,000. For more information about the APPT, visit its official web site by clicking here.

Judges Leads All Players as APPT Macau’s Day 2 Begins

After the first three starting days of the Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT) Macau main event, the United Kingdom’s Darren Judges has emerged as the overall chip leader heading into Day 2.

A huge field of 170 players showed up for yesterday’s Day 1C, doubling the field size of the first two days combined. The large field boosted the total number of entrants to 342, which means that first place will be paying out a total of HK $3,246,200 in prize money.

As a result of the larger number of runners yesterday, there was a big chance for players to amass plenty of chips before the day was over. That’s exactly what happened as Judges eliminated player after player to end up with a total chip count of 173,800 – good for the top overall spot on the chip count leader board.

Judges was absolutely on fire, even eliminating top players such as PokerStars Team Asia Pro Tae Joon Noh. On a board of {q-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{6-Spades}, Judges moved all-in and Noh made the call. He would only be met with disappointment, though, when he saw that his {k-Diamonds}{k-Hearts} was drawing thin to Judges’ {a-Clubs}{10-Spades}. The river did not bring the king he needed, sending the PokerStars pro to the rail about an hour away from the end of the day.

The next biggest chip stack from Day 1C belonged to Ralf Westphal with 115,000. Trailing Judges in the overall chip count board are Henrik Gwinner (140,700) and David Steicke (124,950), who both played during Day 1B.

Here are the top ten chip counts heading into Day 2:

Darren Judges 173,800
Henrik Gwinner 140,700
David Steicke 124,950
Jun Wei Liu 124,475
Ramon Demon Cserei 118,250
Brendon Rubie 114,375
Alexandre Chieng 113,100
Ralf Westphal 111,775
Yong Hyun Yoo 101,025
Dinh Le 97,800
