Victorino Torres Wins APPT Macau Main Event

Victorino Torres of the Northern Mariana Islands was the big winner at the recently concluded Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT) Macau  main event, outlasting 341 other players to win HK $3,246,200 in prize money.

An attorney by profession, Torres had to face adversity all throughout the tournament. Left with just 2,500 in chips after Day 1, he rebuilt his stack to a respectable number only to have it reduced to about seven big blinds on Day 3.

Undaunted, he made the long climb back until he was part of the final table. Even then, he had his work cut out for him as he started the final day with the second-smallest stack.

Torres never gave up, though, and he finally had his breakthrough late in the day as he caught fire and eliminated two consecutive players to end up with a commanding chip lead over Cole Swannack and Chong Cheong.

After Cheong had eliminated Swannack, who moved all-in with deuces only to find that Cheong had limped with aces, the tournament was down to the final two. Cheong would manage to double-up early on, but Torres would make sure that heads-up play wouldn’t last very long.

On the final hand, Cheong raised from the button to 125,000 and Torres made the call from the big blind. The flop came {j-Spades}{10-Hearts}{9-Spades}and Torres checked over to Cheong, who immediately moved all-in for a massive overbet of the pot.

Without hesitating, Torres snap-called the shove and tabled {8-Clubs}{7-Clubs} for the flopped bottom straight. However, Cheong was still alive as he had outs to the higher straight with {q-Spades}{6-Clubs}. The cards he needed would not come, eliminating him in second place for a cash prize of HK $2,088,000.

Here are the payouts from the final table:

1st - Victorino Torres (3,246,200 HKD)
2nd - Chong Cheong (2,088,000 HKD)
3rd - Cole Swannack (1,177,600 HKD)
4th - Jeppe Drivsholm (891,000 HKD)
5th - Kenny Nielsen (700,000 HKD)
6th - Brian Green (572,900 HKD)
7th - Kai Paulsen (445,600 HKD)
8th - Albert Kim (350,100 HKD)
9th - Keith Hawkins (254,608 HKD)

This year’s APPT Macau was held from May 18-23 at the Grand Lisboa’s PokerStars Macau poker room. Buy-in was HK $40,000. For more information about the APPT, visit its official web site by clicking here.

Judges Leads All Players as APPT Macau’s Day 2 Begins

After the first three starting days of the Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT) Macau main event, the United Kingdom’s Darren Judges has emerged as the overall chip leader heading into Day 2.

A huge field of 170 players showed up for yesterday’s Day 1C, doubling the field size of the first two days combined. The large field boosted the total number of entrants to 342, which means that first place will be paying out a total of HK $3,246,200 in prize money.

As a result of the larger number of runners yesterday, there was a big chance for players to amass plenty of chips before the day was over. That’s exactly what happened as Judges eliminated player after player to end up with a total chip count of 173,800 – good for the top overall spot on the chip count leader board.

Judges was absolutely on fire, even eliminating top players such as PokerStars Team Asia Pro Tae Joon Noh. On a board of {q-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{6-Spades}, Judges moved all-in and Noh made the call. He would only be met with disappointment, though, when he saw that his {k-Diamonds}{k-Hearts} was drawing thin to Judges’ {a-Clubs}{10-Spades}. The river did not bring the king he needed, sending the PokerStars pro to the rail about an hour away from the end of the day.

The next biggest chip stack from Day 1C belonged to Ralf Westphal with 115,000. Trailing Judges in the overall chip count board are Henrik Gwinner (140,700) and David Steicke (124,950), who both played during Day 1B.

Here are the top ten chip counts heading into Day 2:

Darren Judges 173,800
Henrik Gwinner 140,700
David Steicke 124,950
Jun Wei Liu 124,475
Ramon Demon Cserei 118,250
Brendon Rubie 114,375
Alexandre Chieng 113,100
Ralf Westphal 111,775
Yong Hyun Yoo 101,025
Dinh Le 97,800

This year’s APPT Macau will be held from May 18-23 at the Grand Lisboa’s PokerStars Macau poker room. Buy-in is set at HK $40,000. For more information about the APPT, visit its official web site by clicking here.
